Synopsis:一位名叫艾文的天文學教授在野外墮崖身亡，與他同行的愛犬亦神秘失蹤。在案發現場，死者遺下了一塊日食觀測板、一本關於日食的書和一本筆記本。由於案發時正出現英國百年難得一見的日環食，於是警方判斷艾文是為了觀測這個天文奇景而失足致死，案件並無可疑。可是，在案發前一天，艾文的研究室卻遭小偷入內爆竊，加上其愛犬非常忠心，不會在主人遇難時無故離開。福爾摩斯認為事有蹺蹊，於是出手調查，並在視察遭爆竊的研究室後鎖定兩個疑犯，更從日環食中發現案中種種破綻，逐漸逼近殺人真兇！
